Global Overview
ENERGY CONSERVATION

Energy has always been a vital resource in the development of any nation. The prosperity of a nation is measured in terms of per capita energy consumption besides GDP, GNP, etc. While the world has seen hectic industrial activity in the past century it has also come face to face with serious problems arising out of haphazard utilization of the energy resources. The concept was 'More the resources (energy), more the development'. Low fuel costs did not encouraged efficient utilization of energy. During the intensive process of industrialization the world observed consumption of majority stock of its energy resources and deterioration of the global environment. Energy made up a very small component of the total production cost and monopolized business enabled recovery of high cost of energy.
The Gulf War came as an eye opener for all developed and developing countries. It was then the first time that nations importing petroleum products felt the shock when the petro-nations demanded higher price. The energy crisis of 1973 forced the world to look for an alternative arrangement to ensure energy sufficiency. This need obviously pointed at improvement of energy efficiency. The concept changed to 'More efficiency, more productivity and reduced production cost'. This promised an immediate, long term and multi-faced solution to the problems immerging from increased energy demands against short supplies. Energy management has since become the key word for any profitable industrial unit

Energy Audit

An energy audit is a preliminary activity towards instituting energy efficiency programs in an establishment. It consists of activities that seek to identify conservation opportunities preliminary to the development of an energy savings program.
The Role of an Energy Audit -
To institute the correct energy efficiency programs, you have to know first which areas in your establishment unnecessarily consume too much energy, e.g. which is the most cost-effective to improve. An energy audit identifies where energy is being consumed and assesses energy saving opportunities - so you get to save money where it counts the most.
In the factory, doing an energy audit increases awareness of energy issues among plant personnel, making them more knowledgeable about proper practices that will make them more productive. An energy audit in effect gauges the energy efficiency of your plant against “best practices”. When used as a “baseline” for tracking yearly progress against targets, an energy audit becomes the best first step towards saving money in the production plant. .......Read More.

TIPS FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION

Microwave your meals: While Microwaves do consume electricity they are between 3.5 and 4.8 times more energy efficient than traditional electric ovens. Cooking and reheating with a microwave is faster and more efficient than a stove top or oven.
Adjust your Thermostat: Adjusting your thermostat is free, easy and can yield big savings. Every degree you raise your thermostat in the summer will reduce air conditioning bills by about 2 percent. Lowering the temperature by one degree in winter will save you 3 percent on heating bills. Regular maintenance and a tune up every two or three years will keep your heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, system operating efficiently, saving energy and money. A programmable thermostat -- excellent for a family that spends a good part of the day at work or school
Switch to cold water: Almost 90 percent of the energy used to wash clothes is used to heat the water. Save money and energy. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water, instead of hot, using a detergent formulated for cold-water use.
Have a Backyard or terrace? ..then Line-dry your clothes: Dry your clothes on a laundry line..just the way grandma used to rather than throwing them in the dryer. Clothes dyers are the third-largest energy users in the home, behind the refrigerator and washing machine. It may take longer but it dries it just the same. Already have a dryer?..save it for a rainy day...while the sun is bright and shinning let that dry your clothes.
Switch to CFLs.: Compact fluorescent bulbs use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. They're more expensive than traditional light bulbs, but it only takes about 3 months to make up for the higher sticker price in energy savings. ..........Read More.

Meeting of two Thriving Giants of Asia
Experiences of S.N.Dwivedi Member IIA-Noida & MD Elcomponics who accompanied the delegation to China with H.E. Pratibha Patil President of India

It was my privilege to be a part of an important business delegation to China recently. The delegation was headed by Her Excellency Smt. Pratibha Patil, President of India. Mr. Subodh Kant Sahay, Minister of Food Processing Industry also accompanied us during the visit.
I am pleased to share my experiences and observations of the visit through IIA News.
The meeting was to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The major discussions during the meet included the rising cost of manufacturing because of recent hike in wages which is a good opportunity for Indian Business to get some components manufactured in India. But the Indian Industry still needs to fully address itself to the opportunities present in China. Another, main issue is the size of investments and the depth of engagement with China as compared to the foreign players which have put in several billions in China.
There is a need for Indian companies to revaluate their outlook towards China. The immediate goal for government of both the countries is to achieve the trade targets of $60 billion set for this year. Quantitatively, the two countries met their targets of $40 billion three years ahead of schedule and are seen to be on course to reach the $60 billion mark. However, our trade represents not just a quantitative growth in our ties but a larger broadening of contacts between our societies. For this we are going to face three major challenges:-..........

Innovation Indeed: A refrigerator that runs without electricity

It is IIA's endeavour to promote all innovations and innovators esp at the grassroot level. Mansukhbhai Prajapati of Gujarat by inventing 'poor people's refrigerator' has endeared himself to masses while attracting world wide attention but he still requires support for sufficient exposure to the market, thereby making his products accessible to the target audience. By highlighting his achievements through this news magazine, we hope to garner the desired support for Mansukhbhai from the Govt and nation wide retail stores.
To be called a 'true scientist' by APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India, is no mean feat in itself and that is the honour bestowed upon an unassuming craftsman based in Gujarat.
Shri Mansukhbhai Prajapati with his invention Mitticool, a clay refrigerator that works without electricity has turned heads all over the world. Scientists and journalists from across the globe have visited his unit to get a glimpse of his low-cost eco-friendly products.
Presenting the national award to Mansukhbhai in 2009, President Pratibha Patil appreciated his work and asked him for a Mitticool.
Mansukhbhai is not keen on money. His ambition is to make more low-cost and eco-friendly products for the masses.
"A good majority of Indians cannot buy a fridge as it is expensive. Besides this, electricity bills and maintenance cost is also high. Mitticool is an eco-friendly product which has no maintenance costs. It also retains the original taste of vegetables, says Mansukhbhai who has sold 1500 units so far.
"I failed in the tenth standard. But I was not disappointed as I knew that I was capable of making something new," says Mansukhbhai who holds a patent for Mitticool.
People who considered him as incapable, now look up to him. They say, "you are the pride of our community!" He has been popularizing earthen products since 1988. The only drawback for him is the lack of stores to sell them.
The products are mostly available in Gujarat and in some stores in Mumbai and Pune only. Besides, the low-cost fridge, he has developed a water filter, non-stick tava and a pressure cooker all made of clay. And he has many more innovative ideas. ..........Read More.
