Path for the Growth of MSMEs
NEERAJ SINGHAL, Divisional Chairman, Iia Meerut Division-ii

In the current era of economic slowdown, every where we are getting negative growth rate - whether it is GDP (Gross Domestic Product) or IIP (Index of Industrial Production) or value of Rupee, every thing is going down. We must seriously think which path can lead us to growth.

In my viewthere are two areas of action:-

  1. Area of concern (related to us but can't do much individually) and
  2. Area of influence (wherewe have the control

We must identify our area of concern & area of influence. Generally we always bother about our area of concern & do not think about area of influence. If we shift our paradigm to the area of influence instead of concern, then I believewe can do miracles in our sector. In other words, forget about what the government is doing or not for us. Just remember to do the best wherever and whatever we are doing, because that is the area where we can influence and give result for ourselves, our family and our society/nation.

We have to draw a new far bigger line of positivity for making line of negativity very small which will definitely lead all of us to the path of growth.

Now the question is “what's hat bigger line of positivity & opportunity?” There can be so many views. But if we really want to grow thenwe must focus on the following 4 M(Men, Machine, Money & Market) which are governed by a 5thMi.e.,Management.

1st M – Man: If we take care of our men they will take care of our industry.. So, always take care of your men and they will reciprocate with 100 %-this is nature's law. Teach them, train them and transform them!

2nd M– Machine: In an era of automation, we must always focus on how we can reduce our production time by improvement and innovation in our plant and machinery. This requires automation. However, complete automation may not be suitable for our country due to unemployment situations. The cost of automation is much higher than the human resources available in our nation. So, semi automation with the focus on reducing production time, appears to be the best solution. This can lead us to the path of growth.

3rdM- Money: I think we all take care of our money very effectively. That is, we may be managing our cash, bank, wallet etc. perfectly. But the food-for-thought is - are we managing our stock / inventory as perfectly aswe should? Indirectly, inventory means money as it blocks capital. Therefore you need to manage your inventory as well. There
are manyways to manage your inventory in an effective manner using techniques such as ABC Analysis, LIFO, FIFO, JIT etc. Now a days IT can be a very good tool for planning and managing your inventory (money).

4th M- Market: as far as the market is concerned, sky is the limit!May be due to some political/ geographical barrier we are not able to access all countries, but we must at east strive to increase our penetration to more and more territories every year. In our country itself, as per income tax department, there are more than 641 cities where more than 100 billionaires reside. So why don't we aim to target at least these opportunities which are available in our country? The MNCs are taking away these opportunities from us due to lack of focus on our area of influence. MSME's must collectively start expanding their market by exploring not only national but also in international markets. We must give 'C' factor to 'c' (Competition factor to China). This can lead us to the path of growth.

5th M - Management: To achieve the all 4 Ms mentioned above, we must apply the 5th M, which is Management: Manage self/family/organization/society/nation/world. I am not a management guru, but I believe that the perfectway of management is “MANAGE = MAN + AGE”, i.e., If we give a task to a “MAN” according to his “AGE” (experience), then he will give you the best possible results.

So the gist is, focus on your area of influence, draw a bigger line of growth using the above 5M's, and you will see that the line of negativity will automatically go off and we will be automatically on the path of growth, which ultimately will pave way for the growth of MSMEsas a whole.
